What is Stroke Screening?

Stroke screening can save your life. Every year, over 795,000 people have strokes in the United States. Imagine how many of these situations could be avoided with proper testing. So, what exactly is it?

Stroke screening, a.k.a. carotid (kuh-ROT-id) ultrasound, tests for blocked or narrowed carotid arteries. Blocked or narrowed carotid arteries increase the chance of stroke. The results of this test can help your doctor determine a treatment plan to lower your risk of having a stroke.

"An ounce of prevention is worth more than a gallon of cure," as they say. Meaning, it's much better to get stroke screening ahead of time (the "ounce of prevention") to see if you are at risk of having a stroke, than wait for a stroke to happen, which comes with a high risk of death, and then have to go through years of treatment to try to fix your body (the "gallon of cure").

  • High cholesterol

  • Diabetes

  • High blood pressure

  • Family history of stroke or heart disease

  • Abnormal sound in carotid arteries

  • Coronary artery disease
